The BWA Gallery Art Club — artistic expression various workshops Our gallery's Art Club — artistic expression workshops, provide participants with the opportunity to become acquainted with various techniques for producing...

Batik — a technique of hand-painting fabric, such as silk or cotton, involves first applying hot wax to the areas that are not to be painted, and subsequently soaking the fabric in dye or applying dye with a brush. As a result, a cloth is covered with decorative patterns, which are made up of the dyed and uncoloured areas. The whole process can be repeated over and over to achieve the desired colour combinations. The dried wax can be cracked, which lets dye seep in, creating the characteristic batik effect, which can be seen after the wax has been removed from the fabric. Traditionally, batiks are made using natural plant dyes.

The workshops will provide participants with the opportunity to learn all about the art of batik and its history, and to get familiar with the basic tools and materials. The practical part will involve creating a stained-glass effect picture, as well as decorating a bag and a t-shirt. There will also be a chance to make a decorative tablecloth or a scarf, which will require multiple dying of the fabric.
