Karolina Breguła ‘Uprooted’ — exhibition and meeting with the artist

From the 17th October onwards, our Gallery's Small Space will be showing two films by Karolina Breguła — a multimedia, installation, happening, video and photography artist, born in 1979 and a graduate of the Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź. Her works have already been displayed in various institutions, such as the National Museum in Warsaw, the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk, the Kalmar konstmuseum in Kalmar, Sweden and at Real Art Ways in Hartford, USA. She is a winner of the Samsung Art Master competition and a recipient of scholarships awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Polish National Centre for Culture (Młoda Polska/ Young Poland) and the International Visegrad Fund.

‘Fire Followers’ is a film about a centuries-old city which repeatedly fell prey to fire until modern solutions made it fireproof, seemingly allowing its inhabitants to live without the anticipation of yet another imminent catastrophe. However, they cannot get rid of their fear. Everyone has heard of a group of art historians who claim that these fires, which recurred with deadly regularity to sweep through museum collections, have become part and parcel of local art, ensuring its development. Inhabitants suspect that art historians run a secret organisation dedicated to setting fires which will destroy ancient works.

The other film to be screened in our Small Space is entitled ‘Offence’ and has been made specially for the Views competition exhibition in the Zachęta National Gallery of Art.
