Janusz Karbowniczek ‘Conversation” — announcement of the exhibition

Drawing on the time-honoured motif of sacre conversationi (sacred conversation), ‘The Conversation’ places emphasis on dialogue as a way of gaining mutual understanding. This cultural dialogue works on multiple parallel levels. On the historical level, it defies tradition; from the psychological viewpoint, it is a dialogue with the audience, and in the category of ‘transcendence’, it engages us into a discourse with the world, contemporaneity and the absolute. The motif of conversation has always been present in this artist’s work — as a universal way of exchanging values, as well as pursuit of the meaning of existence and making discoveries, both in the human and super-real spheres. Thus, his art attempts to ascertain the place and role of the individual in a globalized world, in these times of defiance and oblivion.

The exhibition is a presentation of 40 years of Janusz Karbowniczek’s work, both drawings and paintings. The artist, who was born in Przemyśl, Poland, in 1950, graduated from the Katowice branch of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he has been a teacher since 1977, and where he currently holds a professorship.
Janusz Karbowniczek has participated in over 300 exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He has received numerous awards, which include the ‘Gloria Artis’ Award for Distinguished Service to Culture (Katowice, 2013).
