Tomasz Struk. Translucencies and (Non)Memories

The exhibition Tomasz Struk. Translucencies and (Non)Memories is an art project encompassing various events that are meant to commemorate one of the greatest figures in Polish art — Tomasz Struk. The artist came from Silesia and a considerable part of his life is associated with Bytom, Gliwice and Katowice, yet as a heartfelt European, he also resided abroad, living and working in Berlin and Paris.

The exhibition Tomasz Struk. Translucencies and (Non)Memories, along with an accompanying monograph, recalls the artist's life and work, allowing the audience to consider his works in the broader context of contemporary art practice. Persistent throughout Struk's oeuvre is the theme of the genealogy of gesture and memory. Ever since the 1970s, the discourse involving time and its mark on our memory was evident in his works. In the process of reconstructing the domain of Mnemosyne, the missing elements became replaced by engravings, stamps and half-tone screens. What makes Struk's art stand out is genuine essentialism with regard to how he picked out different traces of memory and placed them in the eschatological order of a human being. The exhibition includes the installation The State of Memory, which is displayed in Muzeum Śląskie, and the graphic prints display entitled Translucencies, which is open for public viewing in Rondo Sztuki, the gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts.
