Since the dawn of time people have lifted up their heads to look at the sky. It was their way of transcending the limitations of their curious eyes and order-seeking minds. The invisible, the vague and the undiscovered gave people sleepless nights and tormented their imagination, resulting in celestial maps drawn on rocks, papyruses and parchments. These atlases of the universe became a temporary source of laws and rules, a futile attempt at solving the mystery of fate and comprehending the forces that govern the universe.
Today we do not show such strong interest in the sky, but postmodern fluidity and jitters seem to make us ponder again about notions such as time, infinity and eternity. The universe needs to be incorporated into frames that guarantee predictability and safety. This challenge has been taken up by over a dozen artists experimenting with celestial systems. Their quest for order and meaning can be seen in their works at the level of abstract models, geometric compositions and structures that stretch out at a rhythmic pace.
